copyright was originally no more than the right to copy. publishers were awarded this right by the author. it had nothing to do with protecting intellectual property. it had everything to do with limiting who could profit off of specific texts. once upon a time, a story could be told using the characters of a previously published tale and no one needed permission from anyone to do it. this enriched us all. it really did. everything from further adventures with beloved characters to entirely new directions for the world they inhabited and everything in between was not only possible, but standard practice. and as new works emerged, new ideas emerged with them. new movements. that time is long passed. now we live in the marvel universe.
